The discovery of a 3,800-year-old city on the slopes of the Peruvian desert could change our understanding of the origin of civilization in the Americas.
About four hours' drive north of Lima, the dirt slopes of Emek Sofer offer a dry and unfriendly landscape: windswept plains, crumbling walls of clay and mud, and heat waves rising from the heart of the desert. It's hard to imagine that these dry slopes once hosted one of the world's first great civilizations, and now a new discovery in the heart of this desert is changing the narrative of the history of the Americas.
