A group of Iranians imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates was released.

Ismail Bakai, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, said that the release of these prisoners is the result of the consultations held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly between the two countries:

"The release of some of our countrymen that took place last night is good and valuable for us. We must thank the UAE authorities for their cooperation in this matter." The number of those released has not been officially published.

Mr. Bagai expressed his hope that "the rest of the Iranians who are in prison will be released as soon as possible."

It is not known why these people were imprisoned, but the Sedavasima news agency reported that they "spent years under baseless charges in UAE prisons" and "several Iranian women" were among them.

In this report it is stated: "Legal and diplomatic pursuits are being conducted seriously to realize the rights of these compatriots." During the last few months, a number of Iranian detainees were released from the United Arab Emirates, all of them were "fishermen". 55 people in July and 10 people in September.
