German Chancellor Friedrich Merz traveled to Kyiv on an unannounced visit to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This meeting takes place amid an escalation of Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Mr. Merz, who was accompanied on this trip by the heads of several defense industry companies, said that "Russia's war machine could ignite the fire of other conflicts unless it is stopped."

Germany is set to provide one billion euros in military aid to Ukraine, including air defense systems equipped with Russian jet engines.

Mr. Zelenskyy said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had then ordered a "ground attack on Ukrainian civilians" that "failed" to achieve its military objectives.

Yesterday, the second-largest bridge in the Ukrainian capital was the target of Russia's ground attack.

Kyiv's second main bridge, the "Darnytskyi Bridge", was targeted repeatedly by Russian drone attacks on Thursday and Friday (October 1 and 2). Russia announced that its drones were targeting two bridges used for "transporting Ukrainian troops and military cargoes".
