The price of the dollar in the open market of Iran rose again today and reached about 270 thousand tomans. The British pound was sold for 357 thousand tomans and the euro for 304 thousand tomans. The dollar exchange rate in Iran's open market has risen by one hundred and thirty percent in the past year.
At the same time, the Central Bank of Iran says that it has begun to inject currency into the market. Banks of Saderat, Mellat, Tejarat and Saman sell coins up to 10,000 dollars to people over 18 years old by presenting a national card. The central bank previously announced that it would offer a two billion dollar currency in the market. It was said that in the first stage a billion dollars will be offered.
Can this action really stop the depreciation of the riyal, or does it have only a short-term effect on the price of the dollar?
