California has officially banned child marriage. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law ending the practice; Procedures still legal in 32 US states.
Under the new law that will take effect on January 1, 2027, people must be at least 18 years old to get married in the state of California.
Mr. Newsom called the law "an act to protect children and minors in California" that "should have been done a long time ago." He signed the law in the presence of Courtney Stadden; A man whose parents allowed him to marry a 50-year-old Hollywood actor at the age of 16.
