In the round of sanctions it recently implemented, the US threatened with sanctions the airports that host or provide services to Iranian flights, and as a result, many flights of Iranian airlines to neighboring countries, including Iraq, were stopped in recent days.

In a statement published on Saturday, the Iraqi Prime Minister's office stated that the purpose of the talks was to obtain an exemption that would "enable the resumption of air travel for humanitarian purposes, including medical treatment, education, religious pilgrimage and matters related to citizens."

This statement continues: "The Iraqi government, while trying to reduce tensions in the region, emphasizes that the continuation of the crises will complicate the situation."
