On Thursday, in a meeting with a group of journalists and members of American think tanks, Mr. Irakichi said that if certain conditions were met by the United States, the Strait of Hormuz "will be reopened after seven days."

He added: "These conditions are not new and are the same conditions mentioned earlier in the Islamabad memorandum."

Abbas Iraqichi also said that Iran believes that "it is better to implement this agreement before the US mid-term elections", while Donald Trump, the US president, said that the agreement may come after the November elections.

In response, Iran's foreign minister said that the timing of this agreement "depends on the United States" and emphasized again that the proposed terms do not differ from the provisions of the previous agreement.
