These statements came after Colombia recognized the sovereignty of the captives over this strategic area last month.

Mr. Sharia said at a meeting of world leaders in New York: "Any attempt to improve our sovereignty and international laws will stop." The Golan will still be part of Syria. Any other attempt will be thwarted based on Security Council Resolution 497."

Earlier, Ahmed Sharia joked with Mr. Trump in a meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly that he asked him to give New Jersey to the prisoners, because according to him, Trump owns it, while the Golan belongs to his people.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Ahmed Sharia said "President Trump is the one who stood by Syria, supported it and made a historic decision to cancel the sanctions against Syria."
