The United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed a defense agreement that allows the United States to build two new military bases on this huge polar island, while asserting Denmark's sovereignty over it.

On Tuesday, before the signing ceremony of this agreement at the UN General Assembly in New York, US President Donald Trump said: "We will immediately begin the process of developing a large-scale military presence in the appropriate places."

Danish Prime Minister Metta Frederiksen said the agreement was "good for America, Denmark and Greenland, as well as Europe and NATO."

At the same time, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, described the agreement as "win-win-win".

By signing this agreement, the leaders of these three countries apparently ended more than a year of tensions over this polar region.
