Guterres asked the US and China to talk about artificial intelligence

We previously reported that Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, opened the General Assembly with his speech.

Mr Guterres said "big oil companies" were treating the Earth's atmosphere like an "open sewer".

In another part of his speech he talked about artificial intelligence.

Mr. Guterres asked the powers of artificial intelligence, considered the United States and China, to enter into a discussion about the future of this technology, similar to the United States and the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.

Mr. Guterres said: "Governments that have the most capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence have the most responsibility towards humanity."

Referring to the contacts between the two sides at the height of the Cold War and before the collapse of the Soviet Union, he added: "At a crucial moment in the Cold War, the strategic rivals came to the conclusion that they must manage common dangers and existential threats."

This is Mr. Guterres' last speech at the opening of the General Assembly. His tenure as Secretary General will soon end after two five-year terms.
