Brian Bedford, an official responsible for aviation affairs in the US, said in a joint press conference with Sean Duffy, the country's secretary of transportation, that an accidental disconnection of a fiber optic cable during an excavation operation for a construction project caused a failure of the radar system that guides aircraft during takeoff and landing.

This widespread disruption to flights comes on the eve of very busy periods for New York City; where world leaders are scheduled to gather on Tuesday for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. More than 130 parties from all over the world are expected to participate in this event and it is not yet clear what the effect of the situation will be on the conditions for holding this meeting.
