John Ratcliffe, head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi on a rare trip to Cairo.

This meeting was held today while the US State Department warned of the possibility of a rapid escalation of the war in the Middle East.

Mr. Sisi's office announced that Hassan Rashad, head of the Egyptian intelligence organization, was also present at this meeting, and the Iran war and the situation in Gaza and Sudan were discussed.

A ground attack on the Persian Gulf states and naval threats were other issues.

According to the Egyptian presidency's statement, Mr. Sisi emphasized the "vital importance of resolving regional crises through political and diplomatic means."

John Ratcliffe's trip came days after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with Mr Sisi in Cairo. The crown prince of Saudi Arabia left for Egypt two days after the Houthis captured the beaches and islands overlooking the Babelmandab strait in Operation Barak. The American media reported last week that Washington rejected Saudi Arabia's request for a ground attack on the Houthis.
