Mr. Bakai said in a telephone interview with Iran's radio news network: "New York has no attraction for Iranian diplomats, but it is a stronghold that must not be abandoned."

He saw the participation of the Iranian delegation in the New York summit not in America's interest, but in Iran's right as one of the 50 founding countries of the United Nations.

Rejecting the "stupid comments" about Iranian officials buying some American stores, Mr. Bakay said: "We have the most stylish stores in Tehran and we buy here what we want."

Referring to the delay in granting travel visas to the Iranian delegation, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman accused America of abusing its obligations as host of the summit.

The American government also rejected the visa applications of several members of the Iranian delegation and did not issue them visas. At the same time, Mr. Bakai emphasized that despite these problems, Iran must not lose its right to participate in the UN summit.
