Sweden summoned the Iranian ambassador and demanded the withdrawal of an Iranian diplomat

Sweden's foreign ministry says it has summoned the Iranian ambassador and demanded one of the senior officials of the Iranian embassy in Stockholm leave Sweden.

The ministry announced that the reason for this decision was the performance of an activity "that is inconsistent with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations", but did not provide any further explanation of the nature of this activity.

Relations between Tehran and Stockholm have been strained in recent years. Earlier, Sweden summoned the diplomats of the Islamic Republic in connection with the arrest of Swedish citizens in Iran.

In June 2024, two Swedish citizens, Johan Flodros and Said Azizi, were released from Iran as part of the agreement that led to the release of Hamid Nouri from prison in Sweden.

Sweden also accused Iran in July 2025, along with several European countries, the United States and Canada, of trying to threaten, kidnap and harass the opposition, journalists and a number of other people in Europe and North America. Iran has rejected such accusations.

The Vienna Convention establishes the rules and concessions related to diplomatic missions.
