In Finland, a fire destroyed up to 20% of the country's seed potato stocks. The fire happened in the municipality of Tirana in the north of the country, where more than 4 million kg of potatoes were stored in four complexes, most of which were intended for planting, Finnish media reported.
"A significant part of the Finnish seed potato production remains in the local market, but is also exported externally. The fire will affect both markets," said Hanna Kortama, director of the agricultural production department of the Finnish Food Authority.
Tyrnävä and the neighboring municipality of Limnikka provide about 70-75% of Finland's potato production. Almost 20 million kg of such potatoes are grown in Israel every year. According to experts, the consequences of the fire can affect the crop for several years.
