Germany's Federal Supreme Court has given the green light to the first-ever defamation lawsuit against the Council of the European Union in connection with sanctions, the newspaper "Die Walt" reports. Billionaire Elisher Osmanov filed a lawsuit back in 2023, but then the court refused to submit it to the defendant. As De Walt revealed, the president of the court had previously consulted with the authorities: the German Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke out against the transfer of the documents, fearing the influence of national courts on EU sanctions. This refusal has now been declared illegal. "Access to justice is a fundamental right. It does not comply with the current foreign policy move," said the billionaire's lawyer. Despite the lifting of the sanctions in September, Osmanov demands that their official justification be recognized as defamation and that the EU authorities be prohibited from distributing it, since the Brussels formulations used Forbes magazine theses, which were previously found to be incorrect in a German court.
