The Tragedy of Those Who Abandoned Their Imam: The Lesson of Ubayd Allah Bin Al-Khur Al-Jufi History does not only remember those who stood by Imam al-Hussein (peace be upon him) in Karbala; It also preserves the painful memory of those who recognized the truth but refused to defend it. Among them was Ubayd Allah ibn al-Khur al-Jufi, a brave and honorable man whose life became a constant warning against the abandonment of the Imam in his time of need. When Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) encountered him on his journey to Karbala, he invited him Ibn al-Hur refused!! He offered the Imam his sword and horse instead, as if material assistance could compensate for the deprivation of his own presence. But the Imam rejected his offer, declaring that if he was not willing to offer himself, his property was not needed. He then reminded him of the grave responsibility that is borne by those who hear the call of Ahl al-Bayt but fail to come to their aid. After the battle of Karbala, Ibn al-Hurr passed by the place where Imam al-Husayn and his companions were killed. Out of remorse, he composed elegies lamenting his failure to stand by the Imam. In his poem, he confessed that he would remain burdened with sorrow for not offering his life in support of the grandson of the Messenger of Allah. He admitted that those who defended al-Hussein achieved victory, while those who abandoned him suffered defeat. But regret could not restore the opportunity he had rejected. His story poses an urgent question for every generation: what is the value of recognizing the truth if we refuse to support it when sacrifice is necessary? Love expressed through words, tears, singing and declarations of loyalty cannot replace action when the imam calls for support.
