Rights and Obligations of Marriage in the Teachings of the Prophet A recorded narration in Mustadark al-Wasil tells the story of a woman known as Khawala, who was reportedly a perfumer who served the household of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). One day, after her husband was displeased with her, Hawla was overwhelmed with regret and fear of displeasing God. When she could not sleep, she sought guidance from the Prophet, hoping to understand her religious responsibilities in marriage. When the Prophet received her and heard her concerns, he spoke at length about marital behavior, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, patience, modesty and fulfilling family responsibilities. The narration contains strong warnings against hostility, humiliation and neglect of a spouse, while presenting kindness and consideration within marriage as acts of spiritual significance. Among the teachings attributed to the prophet is the encouragement of spouses to show patience in times of adversity and prosperity, to avoid placing unreasonable burdens on each other and to recognize the value of daily care activities. A woman who supports her husband in difficulties, the narrator explains, is rewarded for her patience and devotion. Similarly, taking care of one's family, raising children, and fulfilling household duties are presented as actions that can carry deep spiritual value. The account also emphasizes the importance of modesty, maintaining marital trust and respecting the boundaries of family life. She encourages spouses to avoid unnecessary complaints, financial demands beyond the spouse's ability, and actions that harm the stability of their relationship. However, one of the most significant aspects of the narration is revealed when Hawala asks the Prophet what rights women have over men.
