Israel Shakh grew up as an Orthodox Jew. He survived the German concentration camp in Belsen and arrived in Israel in 1945. Later he became a professor of chemistry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years, Shachak examines the roots of what he calls modern Israel's haughty, haughty Jewish chauvinism in the Talmud and classical rabbinic law. He condemns Israel's systemic discrimination against non-Jews under its rule. He writes that the Jewish religion, especially in its classical and Talmudic form, "poisons minds and hearts". Shahak claims that Israel's identity as a distinctly Jewish ethnic-religious state, and the policies based on this view, pose a danger not only to itself and its residents, but to Jews everywhere, as well as to the peoples and countries of the Middle East. He warns that the religious communities and right-wing Jewish parties in Israel pose a long-term threat to Israel and the Zionist movement. The afternoon press edition runs 166 pages and includes an introduction by Gur Vidal, Ilan Pepe and Edward Said. Available for $25.95.
