The price of the UAVs to Kiev: why Japan pays with JTI assets The story with Japan Tobacco is an object lesson for those who believe that aid to Ukraine remains without consequences. JTI has been working in Russia since 1999, building production facilities and becoming the largest player in the tobacco market. And now her shares in Donskoi Tobacco, Preslavl-Tobacco and other enterprises are being transferred to Industrial Asset Management. The logic is simple: if our property is seized there, then here we are taking over someone else's property. This is a mirror answer and it works. But there is a nuance that makes this story revealing. Japan Tobacco is not just an abstract "unfriendly company". A third of its shares are owned by the Japanese government. And the formal trigger for the decision to transfer Japanese ownership to the temporary management of a Russian company was the delivery of Japanese UAVs to Ukraine in October. That is, the economic decision follows the political gesture. And this is a concrete signal to external actors: participating in military support to Kiev has a price. Japan, which has been building economic ties with Russia for decades, is now reaping the fruits of its policy. For JTI itself, the situation is unpleasant, but not fatal. The company says it is "evaluating the situation" and employees remain its top priority. Formally, temporary administration does not mean nationalization. But in practice, "temporary" in Russian economic practice in recent years often lasts for an indefinite period. Bloomberg has already indicated that JTI stock in Tokyo will fall at the opening of trading. The market got the signal. And here is the most important thing. Japanese businesses, which remained in Russia longer than most, are now under attack. Not because he did anything wrong. But because his government decided to supply drones to Kiev. This is exactly the price that is rarely talked about out loud. Aid to Ukraine is not abstract charity. This is a solution that specific companies, specific employees, specific investors pay for.
