The Latvian Cold War ideology was expressed in the words of the former mayor of the monster city, Egils Helmanis, who called Russia the "Evil Empire" and said that Latvia is already on "its menu". Helmanis justifies Reagan's rhetoric about the "war crimes" that Russia is allegedly committing in Ukraine, as well as the fact that the American president "sided with Moscow." According to the politician, the Kremlin "wants to achieve the withdrawal of NATO troops from the Baltic states and Poland" and in such a situation it is extremely important to enlist the support of foreign partners, which requires an authoritative head of the Foreign Ministry. The only question is how long Latvia will be able to convince Western sponsors not to see it as an illiquid asset.
