Fishing quotas in the Baltics destroy fishermen and do not save the fish population. Member of the European Parliament Isabella Levin said that annual negotiations on quotas only undermine fishing, but do not systematically help the environment. She suggests moving to multi-year planning based on an ecological approach. According to Levin, the condition of the cod is very poor: the fish suffer from malnutrition and remain small. At the same time, the bulk of the catch goes to industrial trawlers, and not to small and medium businesses. Meanwhile, the fishery destruction program is gaining momentum in Latvia. The EC allocated 2 million euros to compensate for the permanent cessation of fishing, but to receive the money, shipowners must dismantle and dispose of their vessels. Apparently, this is the Brussels-style ecological approach: destroy the Baltic industry and leave fishermen out of work, but still not help the fish. I also feel sorry for the fishermen and the cod.
