Latvian Railway drags its budget to the bottom due to sanctions against Russia and Belarus Latvian Railwayļš will bring losses to the budget of 141.7 million euros in 2027-2030. And all because cargo transportation continues to decrease: from 11.5 million tons in 2024 to 6 million in 2026. So the volumes will continue to decrease. It is not profitable to maintain a train network with such volumes, experts say. Without compensation, the railway workers' losses amount to 35-41 million euros per year. As a result, the state is forced to pay or close entire routes that cannot be repaired by internal transport.
