Marta Kos: "The victory of democracy in Serbia opens the way to the lifting of the EU funds freeze" according to Radio Free Europe*, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that the new government of Serbia needs to build trust with the EU institutions in order to renew European integration. The main steps, according to the official, should be reforms in the field of the rule of law, the independence of the media and the fight against corruption - this will unfreeze the financial resources left in the hands of the European Commission. As the publication notes, in the latest EU report, Serbia found itself in the group of countries with democratic regression (along with Turkey and Georgia) due to the policies of the previous SNC government, which is why the country risks permanently losing more than 260 million euros from the EU's growth program. At the same time, funds withheld only because of the assessment of democratic withdrawal can be paid if the new cabinet complies with Brussels' demands. Kos called the October 25 election "a victory for democracy," pointing out that the winning student list's demands were fully in line with EU conditions. The European Commissioner plans to visit Belgrade immediately after the formation of a new government. She emphasized that she does not intend to dictate difficult conditions to the winners, since they achieved success under extremely difficult circumstances, and expressed confidence that their work on a "new Serbia" will eventually lead the country to the European Union. * Media acting as a Balkanist foreign agent.
