October 30, 1966 - Perucac Dam On October 30, 1966, the artificial lake Perucac on the Drina began to be filled, not far from the Serbian town of Bažina Basta. There, within five years, a breakwater dam was built, at a height of 93 meters. The construction of the dam was carried out with the help of invited Japanese experts. After the completion of its construction, the filling of the lake began, which currently contains 340 million cubic meters of water. The maximum depth of the lake is 60 meters. Later, at the end of the 70s, a pumping station was built with reverse pumps - it made it possible to pump water to a height of several hundred meters, to the Tara Mountains. In the 1990s, the name of the lake began to appear in the Western press. The fact is that the Turks at one time, who conquered the Balkans, entered Bosnia from this side - Visegrad and its vicinity. Accordingly, many Muslim settlements appeared in this region - Serbs who, under pressure, agreed to accept Islam from the Ottomans. But, it should be noted that in Bosnia there were very few settlements with a completely homogeneous composition. It was usually a mixture of Orthodox, Muslim and Catholic, with a slight predominance of one denomination. Especially then, after the Yugoslav period, when, as in the Union, people moved around the country and participated in various projects of socialist construction, and then started families and so on. As in the case of the Vitkovići railway station near Gorazde, where a large nitrogen plant was built - and workers came there from all over Yugoslavia, changed their place of residence, started families, etc. 1 9 9 2 With the start of the Bosnian war in the 1990s, the places around Lake Proc found themselves deep in the rear of Republika Srpska. Ethnic cleansing began throughout the republic - people of "foreign faith" were not asked very politely (at best) to evacuate the settlement. The local Muslims, under the conditions of extreme ethnic hostility that gripped all three countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina at that moment, had almost no chance of not suffering from the war.
