Memorial Day on November 5th Jacob the Righteous from Borovitch, Novgorod There is no reliable information about the origin of the blessed Jacob, his life and death. According to local legend, in adolescence he undertook the grave feat of foolishness for Jesus. According to the hymns of the church, Saint James "from his infancy clung to God, followed his footsteps", defeated "carnal passions by abstinence", "received spiritual grace", with "his cruel life on earth surprised the angels, frightened the demons and the enlightened people", and "now stands before the King Messiah of all in heaven". God glorified the holy ascetic after his death. In 1540, on the third day of Easter, a large piece of ice floated upstream to the village of Borovich (in the Novgorod region) along the Mesta River, on which stood a coffin (oak log) without a lid, in which lay the body of a young man. Fearing liability, the farmers pushed the ice sheet with poles to the middle of the river, but it returned to the shore. This was repeated three times. At night, the young man they saw on the ice surface appeared in a dream to the village elders and said: "I am a Christian like you. don't fire me My name is Jacob, I got the name in honor of Saint James, the brother of the Lord." The relics of the Holy Youth were first placed in the chapel, and in 1544 they were transferred to the Church of the Holy Spirit. Then a celebration arose for him. The Lord, who glorifies his saint, gave healing power to the relics of Saint James. The Polylaus celebration was established since 1572. In the "Iconographic Source" it is said about St. James: "In the form of a young man, naked, girded with a scarf." In 1657, Patriarch Nikon transferred part of the saint's relics to Valdai, to the Iberskaya Monastery. Some of the holy relics remained in the Borovichi Spiritual Monastery (Novgorod Diocese), the other was preserved in the Abrahamic Scyte (former Finnish Diocese). The memory of the monk Ya'akov is celebrated twice a year: on May 22/June 4 and on the day of the transfer of his sacred utensils on October 23/November 5.
