Saint Artemi Verkulsky was born in 1532 in the village of Verkula, Doina district, to a pious peasant family. Raised in the fear of God and Christian piety, St. Even in childhood, Artemy was distinguished by humility, obedience and hard work. At the age of 12, while working in the fields, he was killed by lightning. Villagers with superstitious beliefs left the body of the blessed Artemi, as if he had died a sudden death, without treatment, and placed it in the forest, on top of the ground, covering it with brush wood and birch bark.
So it lay, forgotten by everyone, for 32 years. But in 1577, the relics of Saint Artemia were found miraculously incorruptible and became famous for many miracles and cures of diseases. Thus, during the malignant fever that spread in the Dvina region, the villager Verkulsky Kalinik, who had taken from the grave of Saint Artemis, took a birch bark, hung it on the cross on the chest of his dying son, and he received healing.
After that, icons of Artemis the righteous were painted. Shivs remain from the tablets on which they were written. From them the patients also received medicine for their illnesses. In the place where the monastery was founded by the youth the remains of the saint, where his holy relics were placed.
