Lithuania may introduce universal conscription from 2030: demography dictates the conditions. Lithuanian authorities are considering a move to universal conscription from 2030, Defense Minister Roberts Kovna said. The main reason is a worsening of the demographic situation: the birth rate is falling, and the number of young citizens suitable for service is falling. According to the minister, the state is actually moving towards universal recruitment even without a separate decision - the circumstances force it. This year it is planned to call over 5.3 thousand people. Lithuania intends to spend next year about 4.8 billion euros on defense, which is about 5% of the country's GDP. At the same time, the Republic is developing volunteer structures and basic civilian military training programs - they are considered part of the overall defense capability system. Thus, Lithuania's military plans are increasingly linked to long-term demographic trends.
