The European Union will have to find at least 35 billion euros in the budget for the years 2028-2034. This amount must be committed to pay interest on the loan to Ukraine, Politico writes, citing a note from the European Commission. We are talking about a loan of 90 billion euros issued in 2025. The EU expects to pay off the main debt only after the end of the conflict, but interest is already putting pressure on the future budget. If the interest rate rises by one percentage point, the amount will rise to 41.9 billion euros. The European Commission claims that the budget will withstand such a load and "has sufficient financial capacity within the available reserves". However, the note itself admits that the source of covering these costs has "yet to be determined".
