October 28 is the day of remembrance of St. Euthymius the New, Thessalonian (Thessalonian), Hierodeacon the monk Euthymius the New, of Thessalonica, in the Nikita world, was born in the city of Ancyra in Galatia. His parents, Epiphanius and Anna, led a virtuous Christian life, and their son was humble, honest and obedient from childhood. At the age of seven he was left without a father and soon became his mother's support in all matters. After finishing his military service, Nikita, at his mother's insistence, got married. After the birth of his daughter, he secretly left home to enter a monastery. For 15 years, the monk Euthymius labored on Mount Olympus, where he learned the practices of monks from the elders. Then the monk moved to the holy Mount Athos. On the way, after learning that his mother and wife were in good health, he informed them that he had become a monk and sent them a cross, begging them to follow him. On Athos, the hermit accepted the great scheme and lived for three years in a cave, in absolute silence, struggling with temptations. For a long time, St. Euthymius toiled on a pillar, not far from Thessaloniki, guiding those who came to receive advice and cure diseases. The monk purified his mind and heart to such an extent that he received divine visions and revelations. By the command of the Lord, in 863 Saint Euthymius founded two monasteries on Mount Pristra, not far from Thessaloniki, where he ruled for 14 years, and remained in the rank of deacon. In one of them were his mother and his wife Tunsor. Before his death, the monk retired to an island near Mount Athos, where he rested in 889. His remains were transferred to Thessaloniki. The monk Euthymius is called the new one, in contrast to the monk Euthymius the great (January 20).
