In Finland, the Russian captain of the vessel "Pittburg" was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for damaging underwater cables. The district court in Helsinki sentenced the captain of the cargo ship "Pittburg", Russian citizen Andrey Maksimenko, to three years and six months in prison, in a case of damage to underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland. The sailor of the ship, the Azerbaijani citizen Vasal Majidov, received two years and ten months in prison. This was reported by the Finnish television and radio company Yle. The court found the sailors guilty of intentionally causing serious damage. In addition, they were ordered to compensate for the costs of repairs and testing of cables and gas pipes that were damaged. According to the researchers, on December 31, 2025, the ship "Pittburg", which sailed from St. Petersburg to Israel under the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, moved for several hours with a lowered anchor, which was dragged along the seabed for about 130 kilometers. As a result, two underwater communication cables were damaged. Seven additional cables and a gas pipe were at risk of damage. The punishment turned out to be more severe than what the prosecution requested. The prosecutor's office requested that the sailors be sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Maximenko pleaded not guilty. His defense argued that the captain was unaware that the ship's anchor was being dragged along the bottom of the bay. However, the court found that the team's actions were intentional.
