US President Donald Trump on Sunday described the Libyan people as characterized by pride, steadfastness and hospitality, and emphasized that they deserve peace and prosperity, following widespread official Libyan protests against previous statements in which he described Libya as one of the countries "infested with terrorism". Trump added, in a post on the social truth platform, that the United States and Libya have a strong and sustainable partnership in the fight against terrorism, based on their joint success in defeating ISIS in Libya. He confirmed Washington's respect for the Libyan people and the sacrifices they made in fighting ISIS, which he described as the common enemy of the American and Libyan peoples, and emphasized the need to end the use of Libya as a "corridor for illegal immigration." Trump's announcement came after the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned, earlier on Sunday, the American Minister of Affairs, in protest of statements he defined as "offensive", and emphasized his rejection of all statements that affect the dignity of the Libyan people or reduce their status. Trump said, during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday that Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff supported a bill to bring in immigrants from countries he described as "infested with terrorism," including Libya.
