On the night between October 31 and November 1, the world prepares to celebrate one well-known holiday. However, the Slavic peoples have their own holiday, no less mystical and deep - Lille Welles - AiF wrote about it recently. Lille Veles is an ancient Slavic holiday dedicated to the change of seasons. It is celebrated every year on the night between October 31 and November 1. Unlike Western Halloween, it is not so much a time of unbridled fun as a time of silence, remembrance and oneness with nature. Our ancestors believed that on this night the earth and all living nature fell asleep until spring. The Slavs saw in Lille Veles a time when the border between the worlds was getting thinner. It was believed that at this moment the barriers between reality (the world of life), the fleet (the next world) and the forest (the world of the gods) were erased. That is why October 31 is considered a special and even dangerous period. Despite the name "Slavic Halloween", the traditions of the holiday are very different from the Western ones. If the Celts dressed up in costumes and made noise to scare away evil spirits, the Slavs preferred to be quiet and not attract attention. Here are the main rituals and customs that our ancestors observed: cleaning and protecting the house. On the afternoon of October 31, they did a thorough cleaning, washing the corners with salt. To prevent evil spirits from entering the house, rowan branches were placed on the windowsills and thresholds, and bonfires were lit in the courtyards. Commemorating ancestors. This is the main part of the holiday. Families gathered around a rich table, but behaved with restraint. A portion of each portion was offered to the spirits, and a candle was placed on the window to show the way to the souls. Lil' Wells is a time to remember relatives who have gone on a good word.
Appease the brownies. In order for the household patron to protect the family all winter, treats (sweets or homemade brew) were left for him at night.
There was also a ritual for wealth: change from a wallet was distributed to the poor with a conspiracy so that the wealth would return to the house. TG VK | YouTube.
