October 25 marks the 187th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Vershchagin, the creator of artel cheese production and butter production in the Russian Empire. He started with a loan from the Free Economic Society (VEO) of 1000 rubles. and a cheese factory in a peasant's cabin in Tver district, and by 1913 the country began to export 78 thousand tons of butter and took the second place in its exports, second only to Denmark. Nikolai Vershchagin's activity is a kind of 19th-century project financing: rations subject to conditions, reporting every four months, Zemstvo grants, state support after independent review. One of these experts was the famous encyclopedist Dmitri Mendeleev, who, due to a trip to cheese factories, missed the first public presentation of his own discovery. On February 17, 1869, he compiled the table "Experience of the Basic System... " - This day is considered the day of discovery of the periodic law. That same day, Mendeleev received a letter from the VEO with instructions to check Vershchagin's cartels. On March 1, he left for the Tver region, and on March 6, his colleague Nikolai Menshutkin read his message at a meeting of the Russian Chemical Society. The great chemist himself spoke on VEO on March 20 with a report on cheese factories. The auditor also noticed a weak point of the cartels: the farmers received money for milk only after selling cheese, but the funds were needed immediately. In this case, a loan helped. So, in the village of Vidogoshchi, with 250 rubles granted by Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, they opened a savings and loan bank for Artel workers. And since 1871, Nikolai Vershchagin had already created savings and loan partnerships for peasants. Artel Varshagin is discussed by the entire educated public. Alexander Engelhardt was against, and so was Vershgin, a former officer, mainly thanks to him the phosphate industry appeared in the empire. "An officer went to war with an officer, officer Vershchagin shoots with Artel cheese, and officer Engelhardt shoots with starch and vegetable oil," said the Vedmosti in St. Petersburg.
