Fire destroys Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest mountain retreat' The Eagle's Nest mountain retreat built for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps has been destroyed by fire, German police said. The former tea house of the leader of the Third Reich, which was built on the summit of the Obersalzberg in southern Germany in 1938, sits at an altitude of 1,834 meters (6,000 feet). A fire alarm went off at the Eagle's Nest Friday night, and it was completely engulfed in flames by the time emergency services arrived, police said. The high altitude complicated the work of about 200 fire fighters, who managed to extinguish the fire only on Saturday morning. "It was extensively damaged. It is unlikely that the house will be saved," the police spokesman told the Bild tabloid.
