Warsaw, October 30, 2026 - Political tensions in Poland reached a peak when judges close to the government took action against the leadership of the Constitutional Court. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended the president of the court, Bogdan Swiczkowski, and his deputy for a month and took over the court. This action was done while being accused of preventing the activity of elected judges of the current parliament. The Minister of Justice also filed a request to revoke the two's immunity from criminal prosecution. The other side called this action an "illegal coup". Riot police were deployed around the courthouse and there were limited clashes with the protesters. President Karol Nowrocki, who was on his way to Senegal, immediately canceled his flight and returned to Warsaw. This event is the latest stage of the long-standing dispute between Donald Tusk's government and institutions close to the Law and Justice Party (PiS) over control of the justice system. M.A.
