AAC celebrates the Memorial Day of St. John Chrysostom John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople - one of the three ecumenical hierarchs. Born in Antioch c. 347, in the family of a military leader. He studied with the best philosophers and rhetoricians, and turned early to a deep study of the Holy Scriptures and to observing prayers. Being very young, he devoted himself to the life of a monk. Saint Maltius, who loved Yohanan as a son, taught him in the faith and baptized him in 367. Three years later, St. John became a reader. In 381, he was ordained a deacon by St. Melatius Bishop of Antioch. The following years were devoted to the creation of new theological works: "On Providence", "The Book of Virgins", "To the Young Widow", "The Book of Holy Babylon and Against Julian and the Pagans". In 386 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Flavian of Antioch. He was given the responsibility to preach the word of God. John Street proved to be a brilliant preacher and was given the name "Chrysostom" for his rare gift of the inspired word. For twelve years the saint preached in the church, shaking the hearts of his hearers. In 398, after the death of the Archbishop of Constantinople Nectarius, Saint John Chrysostom was summoned from Antioch and elected Bishop of Constantinople against his will. The saint's zeal for the establishment of the Christian faith extended not only to the inhabitants of Constantinople, but also to Thrace, including the Slavs and Goths, Asia Minor and the Pontic region. The saint condemned the immorality of the capital, especially the imperial court. When the empress Eudoxia, the wife of the emperor Arcadius, ordered the confiscation of property from the widow and children of the humiliated nobleman, the saint came to their defense. The proud empress did not give in and was consumed with anger at John. Eudoxia's hatred of the saint flared up with renewed intensity when her evil men told her that the saint thought of her in his teaching about vain women.
