Thousands of Americans have renounced their US citizenship or renounced their permanent resident status since the beginning of 2026, with dissatisfaction with the policies of President Donald Trump and the political direction of the country emerging as one of the reasons behind the increase. A total of 4,574 names appeared on the U.S. Treasury Department's expatriate list during the first three quarters of the year, according to the Federal Register. The latest quarterly update, published on Thursday, recorded 1,331 names between July and September. The data also follows an increase in deportation notices since the Trumps returned to the White House. In 2025, the registry registered 1,285 names in the first quarter, followed by 1,057 in the second quarter, 1,593 in the third and 954 in the fourth. The 2026 total is approaching record levels set during Trump's previous presidency. The register recorded 5,411 names in 2016, when Trump first won the presidency, before reaching a new record of 6,707 in 2020.
