Intensive communication continues between Cairo, Ankara and Tripoli, in an attempt to contain the consequences of the Libyan parliament's adoption of the maritime border demarcation agreement between Libya and Turkey, which Egypt refuses to recognize. According to Egyptian sources who spoke to Al-Akhbar, the latest contacts included assurances that the agreement would not enter into force now, at a time when Cairo is working to address the crisis through two separate tracks, one with Ankara and the other with Tripoli. In this context, sources speak of considerable tension in the relationship between Egypt and the Libyan military commander, Khalifa Haftar, due to the latter's "understandings" with Turkey, especially the facilities he provides for the establishment of an air base in the Jahabob desert near the Egyptian border. In closed meetings, Egypt expressed reservations about the establishment of this base - which is now close to being operational - and expressed its fear that it would become "another point of tension", noting that Haftar presented these moves as arrangements to "fight smuggling and control borders".
