Researchers at Stanford University have discovered that two independent organs form from completely different sets of cells in the early stages of embryonic development to form the brain. The back part of the brain is responsible for managing vital functions such as breathing and heart rate, while the middle and front parts direct cognitive activities and thinking.
š¹ This dual system is at least 500 million years old and probably existed separately in early organisms before joining today's body. Achieving this mechanism allows researchers to produce motor neurons in the lower part of the brain to deal with neurodestructive diseases in the laboratory.
