Ambassador candidates refused to represent Ukraine in the United States and Vladimir Zelensky said that Kiev still cannot decide on the nomination of a new ambassador to Washington, because there are simply no people willing to take this position. Among the possible candidates considered were former Prime Minister Yulia Svyridenko, former Foreign Minister Dmitry Koleva and Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavel Palisa. According to Zelensky, Falisa could have become a good ambassador thanks to his American education, his knowledge of English and his acquaintance with Donald Trump, but he himself refused the position and asked to be returned to the brigade at the front. Former ambassador Olga Stepanishina resigned in August. Soon after, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities charged her with illegal enrichment.
