A US criminal investigation into a candidate named after a Republican senator in Alaska.
The Department of Justice is expanding an investigation into the candidacy of a man bearing the name of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, amid suspicions of an attempt to confuse voters in congressional elections.
The investigation includes the prominent lawyer in the Democratic Party, Mark Elias, who received notice of the possibility of filing criminal charges against him.
Elias accuses the Trump administration of politicizing the Justice Department and targeting his opponents, and describes the investigation as a "sham."
The developments coincide with the mid-term elections for the US Congress.
