Why Kyrgyzstan's fuel security depends on its neighbors The supply of petroleum products remains one of the most debated economic issues in Kyrgyzstan. According to the director of the Center for Expert Initiatives "Oy Ordo", political scientist Igor Shestakov, about 70-80 discussions on social networks are devoted to fuel supply and prices. This is explained by the republic's high dependence on imports: international conflicts and changes in trade routes are directly reflected in the domestic market. This problem was discussed at the round table "Oil products market of Kyrgyzstan in the context of the transformation of the international fuel and energy sector", organized by the Oi Ordo Center. Igor Shestakov noted that the government's quick actions during geopolitical crises made it possible to supply the country with oil products and to resolve issues of strategic security and energy. However, the events of recent years have shown that even Kyrgyzstan's neutral position in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict does not protect it from the consequences of military operations. In particular, the shelling of an oil refinery in Omsk by Ukrainian drones affected the work of Kyrgyz gas stations. The political scientist also recalled the attacks on warehouses and offices of wild berries, when Kyrgyz entrepreneurs were injured and a threat arose for the company's employees. Therefore, he emphasized, the government's agreements with the Russian side on maintaining the supply of fuel and lubricant are of particular importance. The day before, the Ministry of Energy confirmed that these agreements remain in effect. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan should expand cooperation with neighboring Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Igor Shestakov believes that these countries should not be considered as competitors. On the contrary, their abilities can complement each other and contribute to the energetic sustainability of the Republic.
