A self-driving drone chases a person through a dense forest without GPS, internet or human control!
The video shows a drone chasing a person running in a thick forest, without the use of GPS or the Internet and without human control.
The drone flies about 2 meters above the ground at walking speed, creating a 3D map of trees as it moves, guessing a person's destination when trees block their view.
Everything works inside the drone itself.
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab designed the hardware, but the software relies heavily on open source tools, mostly from Hong Kong University, so it wasn't completely designed from scratch.
The same lab also has a separate $1.5 million research deal with the military to develop robots that operate without GPS.
