The first official deployment since 1973: the Algerian parliament approves the deployment of military forces in Niger!

Algeria has approved the deployment of military units to Niger, the first official deployment of foreign troops since sending troops to support Egypt in the October 1973 war.

The forces are to be deployed in the city of Madama in northern Niger, near the Libyan border, in a former French base that was used during the Barkana operation.

The mission was described as limited to securing oil and energy facilities, including the Capra oil field of Algeria's state energy company Sonatrach, and not combat.
