France deployed 70,000 police and soldiers on Saturday, while tens of thousands demonstrated against rising living costs and inequality, after a week of widespread unrest.
Clashes broke out in Lyon and Marseille, while police used tear gas in several cities.
In Paris, many shops were closed, more than 20 metro stations were closed and major museums were closed, including the Louvre.
The authorities reported the arrest of 135 people by noon.
