A Chinese naval militia boat was spotted off Taiwan's east coast in August - the first of its kind - operating near a Chinese coast guard ship and a research vessel.

These ships were spotted more than 30 nautical miles off the Taiwanese coast, in an area considered vital for potential wartime supply routes.

Taiwanese officials said the militia ship was taking part in coordinated Chinese naval harassment exercises, and accused Beijing of preparing for a possible blockade of Al Jazeera.
