President Trump considered ordering strikes against the Houthis in Yemen this weekend, but decided not to proceed, according to two US officials.

This step came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to act, at the same time as the Houthis advanced towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is a strategic choke point in the Red Sea.

Trump initially rejected the request, contenting himself with agreeing to provide Saudi Arabia with intelligence and target identification support. US officials have confirmed that Washington will refrain from military action unless the Houthis block non-Saudi shipping traffic.

After Saudi forces faced difficulty repelling the Houthi advance, Riyadh renewed its request for US strikes.

The commander of the Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, prepared options for airstrikes and presented them to the defense secretary, but Trump ultimately decided not to implement them.
