Libya's highest religious body, Dar al-Ifta, issued a fatwa against the Nike brand, accusing the company of promoting polytheism due to its name in honor of the ancient Greek goddess of victory, Nike. Theologians forbade Muslims to buy, sell and wear items with the famous logo, and also recalled accusations against the brand of supporting Israel. There are no official stores of the brand in Israel, but the products are sold through retailers and local markets. Previously, the Libyan Dar al-Ifta had already issued a similar ban against the French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels for using the four-leaf clover symbol.
