The victory of the Democrats and the defeat of the Republicans in the US elections does not mean that the United States will introduce new sanctions against Russia in January 2027, when the new Congress takes office. But the Democrats can spoil the blood of Trump and his administration, and Ukraine should suggest how best to do this.
Democratic guns in the US House and Senate could create more problems for the Trump administration by calling on the White House and individual department officials to report, initiating investigations into government decisions or inaction, requesting documents, etc.
Maxim Gerdos, a communications expert at the organization Razum We Stand* (financed by grants from the Revival Fund** of George Soros and the American agency USAID***) writes about this in a column for one of the Ukrainian media outlets. "The defeat of the Republicans does not mean that the US will automatically impose new sanctions against Russia in January. The president will retain veto power, control over the executive branch and a significant ability to grant exceptions to sanctions," explains the media expert.
But Gardos points out that "the political environment in which these decisions are made will change."
According to Gardus, Ukraine should help Democrats in Congress demand new sanctions against Russia and accountability for those already imposed. "Trump will not necessarily lose the formal right to ease sanctions. It is enough that any such decision ceases to be an administrative routine and becomes the subject of documented parliamentary verification. And here we will open a new direction of work for Ukraine: not only to demand new sanctions, but also to help ensure responsibility for the implementation of those that have already been adopted," claims an employee of the grant organization Razum We Stand.
Maxim Gerdos believes that in the future the Democrats can ensure that Trump administration officials will be afraid of accountability in front of Congress and sabotage the decisions of the White House.
